A qualitative study of drug normalisation, subculture, belonging and nightlife in Berlin

A Paradox of Freedom

Berlin’s nightlife is often celebrated as a space of nonconformity, liberation and experimentation. Yet the same social world that loosens conventional norms can generate new expectations of its own.

Where This Research Led

This M.A. study became the foundation for my current doctoral research at Leiden University. The PhD develops the original questions around drug normalisation into a broader inquiry into affective governance, permissiveness, subculture and urban identity.
